Jumada al-Ula at a glance
- Number: 5, the fifth month of the Hijri year.
- Other name: Jumada al-Awwal.
- Days: 29 or 30 depending on the year.
- Sacred month: no.
- Order: after Rabi al-Akhir, followed by Jumada al-Akhirah.
Why is it called Jumada?
Arabic dictionaries link the name to the cold season, when water “froze” (jamada) at the time the month names were fixed. Because the Hijri year is lunar and about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, Jumada no longer stays in winter and can fall in any season.
