Rabi al-Awwal at a glance
- Number: 3, the third month of the Hijri year.
- Days: 29 or 30 depending on the year.
- Sacred month: no.
- Order: after Safar, followed by Rabi al-Akhir.
Why is it called Rabi al-Awwal?
Rabi means spring: the month is said to have fallen in spring when the month names were set. The name stayed although the season did not, because the Hijri calendar is lunar. The Prophet ﷺ arrived in Medina on his Hijra in Rabi al-Awwal.
