Safar at a glance
- Number: 2, the second month of the Hijri year.
- Days: 29 or 30 depending on the year.
- Sacred month: no.
- Order: after Muharram, followed by Rabi al-Awwal.
Why is it called Safar?
The name is said to come from homes being empty (sifr) in this month, as the Arabs set out to travel or fight once the sacred months were over. Some pre-Islamic Arabs considered the month unlucky, a belief Islam rejected.
Safar in the Gregorian calendar
Safar comes about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar every year, because the Hijri year is shorter. The calendar above shows Safar {hyear} AH day by day with the Gregorian date under each day. To convert any date use the Hijri–Gregorian converter.
